Pregnant & Lactating Ewes

FEEDING PREGNANT EWES

Ewes should be scanned approximately 8 weeks before lambing. A feeding strategy should be worked out to leave them in optimal condition for lambing. Taking into account whether they are carrying triplets, twins or single lambs.

Forage quality should also be established so that the correct concentrate can be chosen. Lower quality silages or flocks where litter sizes are high will benefit from being supplemented with our new Hi Lac Ewe with Lamb 20%. Where silage quality is lower or lower rates the 18% or 19% nut may suffice. Always consult your technical sales representative.

  • When feed levels rise above 0.5Kg the feed should be split between 2 feeds
  • Triplets should receive 20% more while singles should receive 20% less
As a guide, each ewe will require 25 Kg of concentrate pre lambing.

FEEDING PREGNANT EWES

As with the dairy cow, it is important that the ewe has adequate nutrition to meet her peak milk supply if she is to produce enough milk over her 4 month lactation period and maximize the weight of her lambs.

Feeding a quality concentrate post lambing is essential if grass supplies are scarce or forage quality is insufficient. If the ewes milk is compromised it will take a toll on her lambs and may cause a severe setback.

Young lactating ewes particularly benefit from concentrate supplementation post lambing as it helps to avoid excessive loss of body condition score.

UFL: 1 UFL is the net energy content of 1kg of air dry standard barley (fresh weight); all other raw materials are ranked accordingly thereafter. The higher the UFL value, the higher the feeding value of the feedstuff.
